Moving from Wix to WordPress is usually not a file transfer. The practical route is to inventory the existing Wix site, reuse the content and assets you are entitled to use, rebuild the working website in WordPress, map the URLs and switch the domain only when the replacement has been tested.
Understand why you are leaving Wix
Do not migrate simply because somebody says WordPress is “better”. Wix can be a perfectly sensible platform for many businesses. A move makes sense when the business needs more developer choice, different integrations, greater portability, a different cost structure or functionality that is awkward on the current setup.
Inventory the live Wix website
Before building anything, list the pages, blog posts, forms, downloads, images, tracking codes, bookings, members, products and important integrations. Crawl the site and record the URLs that already receive search traffic or links.
This prevents the new WordPress build from accidentally dropping a page or feature that quietly mattered.
Expect the site itself to be rebuilt
Wix sites run on Wix's hosted platform, so the normal migration route is to create a WordPress replacement rather than copy the complete Wix site onto ordinary hosting. Content and media can be reused where appropriate, but layouts, forms and Wix-specific functions generally need to be recreated for the destination platform.
Keep the design if you still like it
A platform move does not force a redesign. The WordPress replacement can keep the existing brand and familiar visual structure, improve weak areas while staying recognisable, or start fresh if the Wix design itself is part of the problem.
Protect URLs and search visibility
Keep existing page URLs where practical. Where they must change, create one-to-one permanent redirects to the most relevant new pages. Carry over useful titles, headings, copy, internal links, image alt text, schema and tracking rather than treating the site as a blank SEO slate.
Build first, switch later
The Wix site can normally remain public while WordPress is built on a development address. Test the replacement, forms, mobile layouts and redirects before changing the domain's DNS. Do not cancel Wix until the new site is proven and any required content/data has been safely recovered.
Wix apps need individual replacements
A Wix site may rely on Wix Forms, Bookings, Stores, Members, Events, Chat or third-party apps. WordPress has alternatives, but they are not automatically equivalent. For each feature, decide whether it is still needed, which WordPress plugin or custom solution will replace it, what data must move and how the customer journey will be tested.
This feature inventory is often more important than copying the page design.
Domain and email can remain separate from Wix
If the domain was bought through Wix, it does not mean the domain has to be abandoned when the website moves. Likewise, email may be provided by Google Workspace or another service and can often remain untouched. The migration should identify those relationships first, then change only the DNS records required for the new WordPress hosting when launch day arrives.
