Copy
Move a working copy of the website, database and required configuration before touching live DNS.
Test
Check pages, forms, SSL, database functions and application behaviour on the new server.
Switch
Change DNS at the agreed time — often overnight or outside normal trading hours.
Monitor
Check the live site after cutover while keeping the old hosting available temporarily where practical.

DNS is distributed across the internet, so nobody can honestly promise every visitor worldwide changes server at the exact same second. Preparing the new environment first and retaining the old copy during the transition is how we keep the practical impact low.

Website hosting ≠ email hosting
Moving the website does not mean moving your email.
If the business is already using Google Workspace, Microsoft 365 or Zoho Mail successfully, we usually leave it exactly where it is. We document and preserve the DNS records while moving only the website hosting.
If the mailboxes are currently attached to the old web-hosting account, we can migrate them too when that is the sensible route.

Keep control of the domain
You usually do not need to transfer the domain registrar just to change hosting.
The domain registration account, DNS, website hosting and email can all be separate. If the business already controls its own domain account and there is no problem with the registrar, we can normally leave it there and change only the DNS records needed for the new hosting.
This separation also makes future supplier changes easier because the business retains control of the asset that everything else depends on.

Website hosting migration FAQs
Do you charge a separate migration fee if I move onto Smarter Search hosting?
No. If your website is moving onto a suitable Smarter Search hosting package, we do not add a separate website migration charge. Any unusual third-party costs or specialist work would be explained before the move.
Will my website go offline during migration?
We build and test the replacement environment before changing DNS and can arrange the final switch overnight where appropriate. DNS propagation means a zero-second global cutover cannot be guaranteed, but the process is designed to keep disruption very small.
Will moving the website affect my email?
Not if the migration is planned properly. We identify where email is hosted and preserve the required DNS records. Google Workspace, Microsoft 365 and Zoho mail can normally stay exactly where they are.
What is included with standard Smarter Search hosting?
Standard packages include cPanel access, SSL, backups and email hosting as part of the package, with server resources appropriate to the type of website. Mailbox storage includes 10GB; additional 5GB blocks can be purchased for £9.99 per year.
What if I need a lot of email storage?
Once a business needs significantly more mailbox storage, we normally recommend a dedicated hosted-email service such as Zoho Mail, Google Workspace or Microsoft 365 rather than continually expanding website-hosting mailboxes.
Can you host Node.js or large database-driven applications?
Yes. Larger websites and applications are quoted around their actual requirements and can use VPS, dedicated servers, Node.js, NGINX or other custom server configurations where appropriate.
Do I have to move my domain name as well?
Usually not. Changing hosting and changing domain registrar are separate decisions. If the domain account is already controlled by the business and works well, it can normally stay where it is while DNS is pointed to the new hosting.
